Dealer Grant Program News

Publicado por eastieboy at 16:57 on febrero 19, 2010

January 23, 2010 – Leavenworth, WA

When 65 members of the Northwest Festival Hosting Association convened in Leavenworth, Washington on a chilly January morning, changing the lives of 14 young people was not written into the day’s agenda.

With assistance from the Specialized Dealer Grant Program, local Specialized dealer Der Sportsman, and Repario (a Nevada based leadership counseling firm) however, the usual droll of networking and idea-swapping  in Leavenworth’s Bavarian-inspired setting was trumped by tears of joy and the smiling faces of 14 children.

The Specialized Dealer Grant Program is a $150,000 advocacy initiative launched on November 1, 2009 that partners Specialized dealers with locally based pro-cycling efforts and charities that benefit the cycling community.

Specialized supported the event by matching the 7 bikes and helmets supplied by Der Sportsman, in addition to the locks and backpacks donated by other local businesses.

“One of the best parts of the Dealer Grant Program is that we get to learn about all of these imaginative ideas that can really make a difference in local communities,” said Mallory Burda, Specialized advocacy coordinator.

“This event was so unique and special, but because of its concentrated local focus, it’s not likely to have found its way onto our Global advocacy radar. It’s exactly the kind of local initiative that the Dealer Grant Program is designed to benefit, and we’re proud to have been a part of it.”

Upon entering the hotel conference room, the team of 65 event organizers from across the Northwestern US was greeted by 14 tables, 14 sets of tools and 14 boxes containing a new Specialized Hotrock bicycle. They were told simply to combine their strengths and build the bike as a team.

It was only after bikes were complete that it was announced that each bike was to be given to a child who had never had a bicycle of their own. That’s when the tears started as the 14 excited youngsters stormed the room, unable to contain their excitement.

The event attracted the attention of the local newspaper, the Wenatchee World, with a front-page feature and an online article with accompanying video.

“The video is a must-watch. It really gives you an idea of the impact that contributing locally can make, and how it can change lives,” added Burda.

Grant applications are being accepted from Specialized dealers on behalf of advocacy groups through Nov 1, 2010 and must be received at least one month prior to the event or initiative seeking support in order to be considered.

I'm a big fan of the Icicle Canyon and it's good to know there's good mojo flowin' up there. Nice work!
